We have confirmed dates for the WORS 2011 schedule, and are adding a new venue for 2011 that we are very excited about. WORS will have one new event for 2011, the Battle of Camrock to be held in Rockdale, WI. This will bring a more local event to our many Madison area participants.

The 2011 schedule was finalized through the input of close to 400 racers that took part in a survey to rank and comment on our 2010 series. We would like to thank all that took the time to participate in the survey.

Calling out to WORS racers, teams and trail advocates on the web

Do you have a website that you would like to share with the WORS community?  Are you a member of the WORS community who posts fun, interesting, mountain-bike-related content on a personal, team, or group website? Are you a trail steward who would like to share your work with WORS racers – and perhaps attract the attention of new volunteers in your area?  A team who’d like to get the word out? We’d like to know about your site and share it here at WORS.org.

The WORS website is visited over a million times each year. Right now, we’re working on some new site features for the 2011 season. The one that we are most excited about will be a hub for the WORS community – a one-stop spot for new blog updates, race reports, team news and advocacy and trail stewardship. All the important WORS news – from YOU. Please consider sending us your site info so that we may include you.

Here’s what we need

  • An email entitled – “Please include my site” sent to teamwors@gmail.com
  • The site title
  • The site url
  • A short (100 character max) description of your site for a WORS audience
  • Is it a team site? Personal site of a WORS racer (or aspiring WORS racer)? Advocacy or group site?
  • Optional: Link to your site RSS feed for “updated recently” queue.
  • Optional: Small (16 px X 16 px) .png or .gif image icon for your site.
  • Optional: when we see updates at your site that we really like, can we re-post a link at our WORS hub to share?

We’re also looking to select a small group of “Official WORS Bloggers” for the 2011 season. If you’re interested, please send us an email. We’re looking for people who already maintain an active website and know how to create engaging stories about their experiences on two wheels. Ideally, we’d like to highlight WORS racers at every level of experience and competitive success. Are you Pro – that’s probably pretty interesting. Just race for fun? So do we! Both? Now we’re talkin’. Whatever your reasons for being a part of the WORS community – we’d like to hear from you. We’d re-post an excerpt of your content and your own, personal “New WORS Blogger Update” image here at WORS when you have new content to Feature – and direct readers to your site for the full story.

WORS Women Spring Fling Rescheduled for April 23

Originally planned for April 16, the Spring Fling has been postponed due to poor weather. Please check back for updates! We have tentatively rescheduled for the following Saturday, April 23.

WORS Women are a group of women who enjoy the sport of mountain biking in the upper midwest. Our goal is to encourage more women to share our sport. Some of us are racers, some of us just ride for fun and many of us are beginners just learning the sport. If you’ve ever thought about going on a group ride but decided not to because you “don’t want to hold everyone up”, we want you to ride with us! If you’ve ever thrown up your hands and thought “I’ll never figure out how to shift”, we can help you learn. Or, if you’re looking for women who train and ride just as hard as you, they’re here too. Some of our members are top 5 elite racers. In other words, WORS Women has something for everyone. Just like WORS, we want to share mountain biking with as many people as possible.

Our second-annual Spring Fling will be help on Saturday, April 23. All are welcome. The free off road duathlon in the morning is for women only. Everyone is welcome to help course-marshal, cheer, and enjoy the potluck and afternoon clinics.

WORS Women Spring Fling 2011

Click on the flyer above to view it in detail. You can also download the pdf here to share with friends or co-workers. Learn more about the event at the WORS Women website, here.

For beginners, this event is a great way to get a feel for riding your bike on trails, and experience the fun of competitive mountain biking. It’s a friendly competition and the trails at Lapham Peak are not rocky or especially “technical”. Demo bikes from Wheel & Sprocket Delafield will be available for any woman wishing to try a new bike. Clinics, informal social time and our new voluntary mentor/mentee program will give novice off road riders the ability to enjoy riding and learn more at their own pace.

For more advanced and intermediate WORS racers, this event is a great way to enjoy a fun race-paced ride and some pre-season competition. You can get in a bit of training, gauge early season fitness (both for yourself and – ahem, let’s be honest ladies – others who you plan to race with in 2011), and get together with friends to have a really awesome potluck with bikes. It’s also a great way to give back and if you’re interested in mentoring a less experienced rider, we want to hear from you! Plus, the White Elephant Bike-Stuff Prize table will be even more amazing than last year.

Here’s a video from the 2010 Spring Fling to give you an idea of what the event was like in our first year.

We hope to see you there. If you are not able to RSVP on our Facebook event page, please drop us a note at worswomen@gmail.com if you’re thinking about attending. There’s no obligation. We want to gauge interest to plan the clinics and potluck for everyone.

If you are interested in childcare at the Spring Fling, we plan on making this available provided there is interest. Please send an email to worsmamas@gmail.com This is a new initiative to provide community-sourced cooperative childcare options at WORS Women events and – ultimately – WORS weekends.

Subaru Cup Video Remix Contest

Subaru is once again the title sponsor of America’s largest state mountain bike racing series. Over 8 years, Subaru has been a wonderful partner and has enabled WORS to bring safe, fun, friendly mountain bike competition to as many people as possible. In celebration of Subaru’s continued support for the WORS Series and the Subaru Cup, WORS announces the 2011 Subaru Cup Video Remix contest.

Last year at the Subaru Cup, presented by Trek, WORS Photographers and Videographers outdid themselves, capturing the action with thousands of great photos and dozens of exciting video clips. Outstanding photos taken by WORS Photographers at the Subaru Cup have been featured ever since at USA Cycling and in national media reports of race results and rider profiles. For the Subaru Cup Video Remix contest, we ask you to combine these great videos and photos with your own unique style and creativity and remix them into a great 2-minute preview of the Subaru Cup. The winning video will capture the excitement of the races, the family-friendly atmosphere, and the near-perfect day we enjoyed at Nordic Mountain in 2010.

Video clips are available for preview in our album at Vimeo, here. We will be accepting additional video clips through the end of the week (submission details below). If you have video clips – please submit them through our easy upload process. Every video clip that is included in the Subaru Cup album will have the chance at the video submission raffle prize – a new 2011 WORS Team Kit. Subaru Cup photos can be previewed and downloaded at Flickr, and we’ll be posting a special set of “favorites” for easy download at the WORS FTP site by the end of the week.

The rules:

Each video will be judged on the strength of it’s ability to include the necessary elements (below) with style, excitement, humor and fun. Any video or image element can be used. Any audio clip, voice-over or music can be included.

All WORS Videos and Photos must be credited! We suggest that this be done in a “credits” section at the end of the video.

The audience for your video Remix will be a wide range of viewers, including spectators who may not be familiar with mountain bike racing, family members and relatives of racers, Pro mountain bike racers, and amateur xc and downhill riders. The emphasis and tone should be on fun and the excellence of amateur racing at WORS. The emphasis should not be on how “hardcore” mountain bike racing is.

About WORS: Remember that WORS races are not just for the highly trained and talented. Mountain bike racing at WORS is a great physical activity that can add to your health and quality of life. WORS is as much about fun, shared experiences and making new friends as it is about the racing. WORS is open to all and welcomes new female and male participants of all ages and athletic abilities. The winning video will accurately reflect these important values of the WORS Series, and combine them with the added excitement of the USA Cycling Pro XCT Series event. The video should also reflect the value WORS places upon the participation by our outstanding sponsors. None of this would be possible without them, especially the support of WORS Title Sponsor, Subaru and Subaru Cup presenting sponsor, Trek.

All video clips and favorite Subaru Cup photos are available for quick, easy download at the WORS FTP site. For instruction to access the site, check here. We will continue to add video clips through the end of the week (3/31/11).

The edited remix video should not be much longer than 2 minutes in total length.

Video clips will be posted as submitted to WORS Vimeo and Facebook. All entries must be submitted before Wednesday, April 27. Submit by uploading the the WORS FTP site, and sending an email to teamwors@gmail.com with your contact information, and any additional info about your video. Please also indicate whether you are interested in being considered for the Official WORS Videographer position on Team WORS.

The winner will be announced online and at WORS Iola Bump & Jump on Sunday May 1.

Prize Package: in addition to undying fame, renown and endless bragging rights, the winner will receive a prize package from WORS valued at over $1400. Field size requirement! Please note – in order for the prize to be awarded, a total of no less than 8 individual entries must be received by WORS by the deadline. The package will include:

  • a $700+ Fox racing fork as seen on page 8 of the WORS Handbook. The winner will have the choice of a Fox 32 Float RLC or 32 Float 29er RLC.
  • a Kinetic trainer package, including trainer, training block and special tires (page 77 of the WORS Handbook).
  • Ryders eyeware (ad on page 10 of the WORS Handbook)
  • a healthy energy package including products from WORS Sponsors HoneyStinger (page 12) and FRS.

Necessary elements to be included in the 2 minute video:

  • Subaru sponsor presence with racers and fans
  • Sam Schultz winning his first Pro XCT race (with voice over, if possible)
  • Trek sponsor presence with racers and fans
  • Amateur racers (all ages and abilities!)
  • Women racers (Pro & amateur)
  • Juniors racers
  • Nordic Mountain venue and Subaru Cup EXPO
  • Crowd and fans
  • Crowd and fan noise in audio
  • Impreza Short Track
  • Outback Super D
  • Complete credits (see details above in Rules)

Videos cannot contain:

  • profanity or explicit lyrics
  • images or video of riders crashing

Interested in becoming the official WORS videographer as a member of Team WORS? This is your audition. We will be considering entrants who express an interest in the videographer position based on the strength of their Subaru Cup Video Remix submission.

Please note: Rules are subject to change at the sole discretion of WORS.

Quick question for our Cat 2 racers

Thanks to the feedback of our racers in 2010, and again this January, WORS has the 2011 Subaru Cup very nearly finalized. Our two remaining questions are for our Cat 2 racers. If you are a Cat 2 racer in WORS Sport or COMP Category, or plan to race in the Midwest Regional Championships as a Cat 2, please take a minute to let us know your preference by Friday, February 11.

Please take our WORS Racer Feedback survey

Lately, WORS has gotten some attention for the quality of our mountain bike racing events.

We’re very grateful, and we know that none of that would be possible without our RACERS. Your opinions really float our boat here at WORS, and we want to hear from you!

We’ve created a single pre-season survey to collect the opinions of our racers this February. WORS newbies and WORS veterans are equally welcome! Please tell us a bit about yourself, your bikes, and what you think of the venues you’ve been to and the courses you’ve raced.

To thank you for your time and opinions, we’ll enter you into a raffle for a great prize package for the Subaru Cup. The special prize package will include a “friends and family pack” of 4 (four) race entries for the Subaru Cup Legacy XC, along with a generous helping of very special and signed items to be presented at the Subaru Cup.

Subaru Cup 2011 News

Trek to Present 2011 National Pro XCT Mountain Bike Race Series Finale in Wisconsin at Subaru Cup

Read more here:

The Subaru Cup Pro XCT, presented by Trek, will host the penultimate contests of USA Cycling’s 2011 national mountain bike racing series in Wisconsin. As part of the popular Wisconsin Off Road Series (WORS), the two-day Subaru Cup event also will include a full slate of amateur racing.

Trek Bicycle today announced that it will continue to support both the Wisconsin Off Road Series (WORS) and the Subaru Cup Pro XCT in 2011. Trek will return as the presenting sponsor of the Subaru Cup Pro XCT race, and the Trek Top Fuel will be the Official Bike of WORS throughout the 2011 Season.

“As the world leader in mountain bike technology, Trek chooses only premier partners,” said Michael Browne, Global Mountain Bike Brand Manager at Trek. “Not only is WORS that premier partner, they set the standard for mountain bike racing in the United States. There’s no better bike to experience the WORS Series on than a Trek Top Fuel.”

Outstanding spectator turnout and amateur participation are hallmarks of events hosted by the Wisconsin Off Road Series, and the Subaru Cup is no exception. At the 2010 Subaru Cup, hundreds of enthusiastic fans lining the course led many Pro racers to draw favorable comparisons to the atmosphere at a World Cup race. The most popular spectator areas, including the Trek Fire Lane Drops, will return in 2011. Based on the modern World Cup model, the Subaru Cup Pro XCT course is approximately 4 miles in length. Over an area of 60 acres, it winds in on itself several times to provide spectators convenient access and numerous viewing opportunities. With wooded singletrack, fast descents and short, steep climbs, the Subaru Cup will offer all racers a real taste of Midwest mountain biking.

Penultimate Pro XCT contests upgraded to UCI Category 1 Status

New for 2011, the Subaru Cup Pro XCT has been awarded UCI Category 1 status on the international mountain bike calendar. The UCI category 1 designation will attract racers interested in chasing UCI points as the 2012 London Olympic Games loom on the horizon. Sam Schultz (Subaru Trek) and Georgia Gould (Luna Pro Team) won the most recent edition of the Subaru Cup Pro XCT in 2010.

The Subaru Cup will also serve as the second annual USA Cycling Midwest Regional Championships, which will crown champions in all age classes and ability categories as “Fastest in the Midwest”.

Now in its 20th season, WORS leads a resurgence of American mountain bike racing. Last year, WORS races averaged over 700 racers and close to 1000 spectators per event at each of 12 distinct venues throughout Wisconsin. Consistent numbers like these have earned WORS the label of America’s largest state mountain bike racing series. With races for all ages and abilities and a focus on rider and spectator fun, WORS never fails to provide a great family-friendly weekend for recreational and competitive cyclists alike. WORS provides outstanding competitive challenges for professional MTB racers, 6-year-old weekend warriors, and everyone in between.

SUBARU CUP - Nordic Mountain

The first priority of the WORS Series is “to create access to fun, competitive mountain biking for as many individuals as possible,” states Series Director Don Edberg. “We’re proud to align the Series and the Subaru Cup with Trek. They are an industry leader in so many ways.”

As the official bicycle of WORS, Trek’s Top Fuel is the ultimate race rig for any WORS participant. A revolutionary full OCLV Carbon crossbow frame, 100mm of front and rear travel, and a ridiculously light component package make the Top Fuel the weapon of choice for elite-level cross country athletes who require the highest level of performance.
