WORS & USA Cycling - FAQ
Q: What is USA Cycling: Mountain?
A: USA Cycling: Mountain (formerly NORBA) is the mountain bike division of
USA Cycling, who's
purpose is to guide, service, and promote mountain biking as a competitive sport
and outdoor activity. USA Cycling is the internationally
recognized body for conducting of National championships, selection of the
National team, and selection of Olympic competitors in the sport of mountain
biking.
USA Cycling has the following objectives:
To achieve widespread mountain bike participation for all ages, skill levels,
and genders;
To have its sanctioned events be of high quality and meet the basic requirements
of good event management;
To be a forum to identify and select the best elite athletes;
To support and promote proper land use ethics and responsible riding;
To influence national and international decisions that affect mountain biking;
and
To promote a good public image of mountain biking and mountain biking cyclists.
Q: Do I need to purchase a USA Cycling membership?
A: For racers who wish to compete in WORS Comp, Sport, Citizen, and Citizen
Youth classes, a USA Cycling membership is optional. Racers wishing to compete in the
WORS Elite class are required to have an annual USA Cycling membership.
Q: What are some of the benefits of USA Cycling membership?
A: By purchasing a USA Cycling membership:
A racer will have their results in USA Cycling sanctioned (WORS) races submitted to
USA Cycling where they will receive points towards Regional and National
rankings,
Those who participate in WORS with a USA Cycling membership, are eligible to be named
State Champions and qualify for the National Championships.
Racers with a USA Cycling membership may also qualify for the National Championships
by placing well in
AMBC (American Mountain Bike Challenge) events of which WORS will be hosting
one for 2007: the Subaru Cup.
Joining USA Cycling strengthens the National organization and helps to promote the
sport of mountain biking.
USA Cycling members traveling by air with their bike have the availability of
discounted transport of their bikes by national airlines.
WORS Comp, Sport, Citizen, and Citizen Youth class participants who have a USA Cycling
membership receive a $3 discount on WORS cross country event entry fees.
Junior riders with USA Cycling memberships placing well in WORS may receive
invitations to Regional and National training camps.
USA Cycling sanctioning allows WORS to provide the best possible insurance coverage
for its riders, sponsors, event directors, and staff, without raising costs to
its participants.
Q: Why did WORS elect to join with USA Cycling at this
point?
A: USA Cycling had made a significant policy change with regard to memberships, with
membership being optional for racers below the expert level. USA Cycling has
eliminated one day licenses which were a cost penalty to the occasional
recreational racer and a paperwork burden to race directors. WORS feels these
changes demonstrate a strong effort on the part of USA Cycling to be
more responsive to the needs of the recreational racer. USA Cycling has
voiced a commitment to improving membership benefits to racers at all levels.
As WORS racers continue to improve their overall performance, WORS has felt
that they are deserving of the National recognition that the sanctioning of its
events will bring to these individuals and WORS as a whole
